Ford Windstar recalled again, this time for suspension issues

Back in August, Ford recalled 462,750 Windstar minivans in Salt-belt states for rear axle corrosion problems, with another 117,000 units recalled in Canada. Then Utah’s 29,900 Windstar owners were added to the list in November. In 2009, Ford also recalled 1.7 million Windstars for faulty cruise control deactivation switches.

So is the much maligned Windstar finally over its recall addiction? Hardly. The Detroit News reports that Ford is issuing another recall for 425,000 1999-2003 Windstars in 22 cold-weather states. The recall focuses this time on the front suspension’s lower control arm, rear attaching brackets and body mount attachments, all of which can potentially corrode to the point of becoming a safety hazard. DetNews says that one possible cause of the corrosion problem is condensation from air conditioning lines that drip on the subframe on the right-front side of the vehicle.

Ford actually informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it was issuing the recall, adding that the company was replacing the parts even though it didn’t feel the repairs were necessary. Ford likely issued the recall in response to NHTSA intensifying its investigation of the minivan to an engineering analysis back in December.

Ford will reportedly begin repairing the recalled minivans as early as March, and some loaner vehicles may be offered while repairs are made.

Toyota recalls 245,000 Lexus sedans in U.S., 1.7 million cars globally

Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300/350, 2006-2009 IS 250 and 2006-2008 IS 350 Vehicles to Inspect the Fuel Pressure

Toyota Motor Corporation announces separate recall involving certain vehicles not sold in North America

TORRANCE, Calif., January 26, 2011 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it will conduct a voluntary Safety Recall involving approximately 245,000 2006 through 2007 Lexus GS300/350, 2006 through early 2009 Lexus IS250, and 2006 through early 2008 Lexus IS350 vehicles sold in the U.S. to inspect the fuel pressure sensor installation.

Due to insufficient tightening of the fuel pressure sensor connected to certain engine fuel delivery pipes (those with Nickel Phosphorus plating), there is a possibility that the pressure sensor could loosen over time. If loosening occurs, fuel could leak past a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and the delivery pipe and through the threaded portion of the sensor.

Lexus dealers will inspect the vehicle for fuel leakage and if no leakage is found, will tighten the fuel pressure sensor with the proper torque. If a fuel leak is confirmed, the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe will be replaced and the sensor will be tightened with the proper torque. The inspection and possible gasket replacement will be conducted at no charge to the vehicle owner.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a safety recall notification by first class mail once the parts that may be needed have been obtained. Lexus will also post this information on its website. Detailed information about this recall is available through Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25 LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987 or at www.lexus.com/recall.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) today announced a separate recall involving 1.3 million vehicles worldwide to remedy a different condition on a different fuel delivery pipe and a high pressure fuel pump check valve. TMC’s recall announcement does not involve vehicles sold in North America.

2010 Ford Fusion safety investigation opened by NHTSA

The 2010 Ford Fusion is the subject of a preliminary investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Problems and complaints that would have been mere blips on the radar in the past are now cause for further scrutiny, and four complaints against the 2010 Fusion, three from the same fleet, have sparked interest.

Even though most of the complaints come from the same 22-car fleet, different operators were behind the wheel when the cause of the complaints occurred. The concern is that the wheel studs could fracture, as the complaints allege happened, which could then lead to a wheel leaving the vehicle and, rather obviously, loss of control.

Though they certainly are not screws at all, you could think of the wheel studs as the “screws” to which lug nuts are attached to secure a wheel to the vehicle, and in this case, the Fusion has five wheel studs per wheel.

A full recall could involve some 280,000 vehicles, and Ford is reportedly cooperating with the agency to bring the situation to a resolution.

KBB looks back at a year in the life of Toyota

Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com® Releases ‘Toyota: One Year Later’ Special Report

Toyota Values Perform In Line with Competitors; Company Fails to Sway Many New-Car Shoppers

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today announces the release of its special report Toyota: One Year Later, providing an in-depth look at Toyota one year after its major recall crisis began in January 2010.

The comprehensive report from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com includes a detailed look at Toyota’s new- and used-car values over the past year; up-to-date shopper data providing consumer opinions, vehicle consideration and safety perceptions of Toyota since the recall crisis began; expert industry analysis from kbb.com’s executive market analysts; and more.

Report Overview
Despite Toyota’s recall woes of 2010, the brand’s used-car values held strong throughout the year. Among the best-performing used Toyotas were 2007-2009 model-years Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Sienna and Yaris, primarily due to their offering of solid fuel economy in an affordable package. Meanwhile, used vehicles from Toyota’s luxury sister brand Lexus underperformed the market throughout 2010 along with all luxury brands, primarily due to the economic concerns of used-car shoppers.

Toyota’s 2010 new-car sales were flat while the industry improved, and the company relied upon heavy incentive spending to spur new-car demand. While Toyota launched aggressive incentives in March 2010 during the midst of the recall crisis, overall the company’s incentive spending for 2010 was in line with its competitors. However, despite relatively flat sales for the year, Toyota’s loss of new-car market share in 2010 was very pronounced, as consumers seemed hesitant to purchase new Toyota vehicles.

With regard to new-car residual values, Kelley Blue Book analysts predict that any long-term negative affects to Toyota’s residuals will not be due to recall stigma, but rather because of other factors in the marketplace affecting Toyota’s residual values, such as softening in the fuel-efficient vehicle segments, aging fleet designs and the aforementioned spurts of heavy incentives spending throughout 2010. Even with all of its recall troubles, Toyota managed to maintain its second-place brand residual standing behind top brand Subaru for 2011.

While Kelley Blue Book’s valuation analysis shows that Toyota fared well overall during the past year considering all that the brand endured, data from Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence reveals that the Toyota recall crisis of 2010 heavily impacted the opinions, considerations and perceptions of new-car shoppers. Nearly three-quarters of surveyed shoppers were aware of Toyota’s 2010 recall problems, and more than half of respondents said they believe that Toyota’s brand reputation has been tarnished by the recalls. However, 40 percent indicated they believe Toyota has adequately resolved its problems related to the recalls.

Toyota’s overall purchase consideration was depressed throughout 2010, with data from the latest quarter (Q4 2010) showing purchase consideration at an all-time low in the last four years. In addition, consumer perception of Toyota safety ratings also experienced an all-time low throughout 2010, and it continues to remain significantly lower than previous years.

As for Toyota’s new-car traffic on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, which can be a leading indicator of new-car sales patterns, the brand’s overall traffic is down six percent in the last year.

However, specific model performance remains mixed, with the Corolla, Camry and RAV4 experiencing declines in traffic on kbb.com over the past year, while the Sienna, Prius, Highlander and Tacoma experienced increased traffic on kbb.com throughout 2010.

GM expands axle pin recall to include more pickups, SUVs

It would seem that General Motors has discovered that the defective axle cross pins responsible for a recent recall were installed in more vehicles than originally thought. The automaker has expanded the recall to cover a total of 26,751 vehicles, up from the 1,262 units in the original notice. As of right now, certain 2011 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe models as well as GMC Canyon, Sierra and Yukon models are included in the newest recall.

As with before, the vehicles were built with rear axle cross pins that may not have been heat treated. As a result, the pieces could fracture and move out of position. If this happens, the defect could actually cause the rear axle to lock up while driving. Needless to say, the problem could easily cause an accident.

GM will replace the pins free of charge, though the recall isn’t scheduled to get underway until January 25. The company says that while one owner did experience a loss of power to the rear axle as a result of the defect, no accidents have been reported. Hit the jump to take a look at the full recall notice.
